Chapter 10

I barked out a laugh and felt something inside of me settle when he used his old nickname for me. He was a good man. That much was obvious. So it most likely meant it was me who couldn’t let go of the past. Or maybe it was somewhere in the middle. Yes, he’d taken me to prom after years of me following him around like a lovesick puppy, claiming being his best friend was enough. And yes, the next day I discovered he’d taken me only to get back at his ex-girlfriend. And yes, he and I had very nearly slept together that night after way too much peach schnapps and an invitation to the back seat of his beat-up car.

And yes, the next day he’d barely talked to me and when we saw each other in the halls of school in the weeks that remained in the school year, he had avoided direct eye contact while holding hands with Stacey Stone, his ex-turned-back-to-current girlfriend. And yes, I had hated him with every fiber of my being for changing everything between us when he did what he’d done.

But so much time had passed and as I sat there in his kitchen a memory surfaced that had been lost for a very long time. It was of me, asking him to sleep with me in the back seat and him gently taking my hands, smiling sadly and resting his forehead against mine as I leaned back against his car.
